Thames Path – Purley on Thames to Whitchurch

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 03:23PM

We’d come back from our camping trip a day early, so we planned a long walk today as our 3rd ‘holiday day’. Unfortunately there was a burst water pipe in Pangbourne and a massive traffic jam that went all the way back to Purley this morning. It stopped us reaching our destination of Aldworth and the walk we’d planned along the ridgeway with lunch at The Bell. Still, it’s programmed into the GPS for another day.

A kind soul who lived in Purley knocked on the car window and told us why we were stuck in an unmoving queue of traffic so we did a U-ey and skipped down into Purley on Thames and parked by Mapledurham Drive. I grew up nearby and so it’s a natural place to hop out of the car to give Dogface his morning walk, even though we’d given up on plans for a nice long walk and a pub lunch.

Silly us! Not only is it a gorgeous bit of river that’s a childhood haunt of mine, but it’s also the Thames Path! One of the most idyllic bits on a beautiful day like today. Sun, cloud, dramatic contrasts.

We walked from Purley on Thames to Whitchurch and back again. A round trip of about 7.8 miles according to the GPS. Stopped at The Greyhound in Whitchurch for a sandwich and coke and met the new landlady, who’s only been in 2 weeks. Great sandwiches and they’ve done a lovely job redecorating the main bar area without spoiling it’s traditional village pub feel. Look forward to visiting again soon.

Stopped at Mapledurham Lock for a hot drink and a chocolate muffin/strawberry split at the cafe. They have a telly installed in the outdoor cafe pagoda for the World Cup! I guess boat folks need their footie fix too.

Lovely day. Dogface enjoyed himself too.
